Are you comfortable with discomfort?

Upon reflecting recently, I felt that my coaching had become a bit stale of late. My own coach had given me feedback, modelled some awesome strategies and reignited a spark.

I went back to some of my valued texts (both on leadership and coaching) and reminded myself of things I had forgotten.

And then, quite by accident on a podcast, I heard the quote:

"Coach the person, not the problem"

I had become lazy and slipped into problem-solving instead of coaching!!!

I often talk about not…

Don't go big, go TINY, to achieve your goals.

The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. James Clear Atomic Habits

If you joined me for the recent Goals with Soul session you'll know that I teach that goals are the habits that you want to create,  you'll also know that one of my goals for this year is to drink more water. Specifically, my ismart goal is: By June 30th I will be regularly be drinking 2+ litres of what a day so that I feel healthier. This is not a "big picture goal" for me but it is one habit that I know will make me…

Looking back and looking forward - musings about being in the moment

woman relaxed free

I once heard someone say:

Depression is worrying about the past and anxiety is worrying about the future.

Like most sound bites, this is mostly true and largely inaccurate.

However, it will work for my purposes.

I almost never look back.

I find it very difficult to re-read material or re-watch videos I have made in the past.

While I collect feedback on my workshops, I rarely ruminate on it. No point - the workshop is over. I add the constructive feedback to my mental list of do better …

Reflecting on Unpleasant Emotions

photo-1527137342181-19aab11a8ee8

Hey there - how are you doing? What is bringing you joy at the moment?

I listened to Tarana Burke - author and founder of the #metoo movement, and she reminded me that you could feel great joy and great sorrow or pain simultaneously.  (Ever laughed at a funeral??)

Whilst I embed wellbeing and positivity in my teaching, it's not because I want you to run around pumping sunshine and engaging in toxic positivity. My biz is called Positively Beaming, for all sorts of subtle reasons, but NONE of th…

Why helping is not always helpful

business woman

Are you a nice person?

Do you try to be helpful?

When people, like your kids, your team, your staff, come to you with a problem, do you love that feeling of being able to find a solution?

Me too!

Being helpful is a good thing.

Being tooooo helpful or attaching your self worth to the quality of your advice ........ well, that is the fast lane to burnout.

Most of us are so bloody busy that when someone shares their problem, we jump in after 30 seconds with advice and solutions.

Often w…

Busting Leadership Myths: You are Ready to Lead!

female-business-leader-workplace-2-scaled

Do you feel you are not brave enough, qualified enough, ready enough to lead confidently and authentically?

Let me tell you a secret... You are ready to lead, NOW.

Myth 1

Leaders are men, in suits

Well, I think that Jacinda, Kamala and a bunch of other awesome women have blown that myth out of the water lately. When we only see men in power OR when the women we see are acting in a way that feels aggressive or masculine, then it is really easy to believe that you need to have balls to be a…

This week in coaching

woman-head-on-side

Every Sunday, I share a newsletter with my list, and amongst other things, I share some of the coaching conversations that I have had. It seems that many of the themes are universal, so I will share those conversations here on the blog.

Questioning Assumptions and Back to Basics

I was coaching a Head of Learning Area in a secondary school this week, and she described 3 staff with very different personalities and how they were challenging her. Lots of ah-ha moments were shared in this coaching …

What blue hair has taught me about confidence.

I have a confession

My white/grey/silver hair is not natural. It is completely artificial by my bestie and hairdresser Cameron. I wrote the full story some time ago, and you can catch it here.

This year, putting together Launching into Leadership and my other online programs involved months of filming my white face and white hair against a white wall. All this had me pining for a change. I tried those flash virtual backgrounds with limited success - the artificial intelligence couldn’t tel…
